Big 12 Sues Texas Tech over Brendan Sorsby

At 8:24 a.m. today, Yahoo Sports reporter Ross Dellenger broke the news that the Big 12 filed a legal complaint in federal court against Texas Tech and Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton. The conference is seeking a declaratory judgment and a preliminary injunction to enforce its bylaws and potentially sanction the university for its plans to play Brendan Sorsby.
The Big 12 also stated that sanctions could be imposed on Texas Tech following requests from other conference presidents and athletic directors urging the university not to play Sorsby.
Voting on those sanctions has been withheld because of the threat of legal action from Paxton and Texas Tech. However, if the vote proceeds and Texas Tech chooses to play Sorsby, possible penalties could include monetary fines and a ban from participating in the Big 12 championship game.
The filing states, “In an industry that rarely agrees on anything, there is finally an issue that everyone seems to agree on (other than TTU and the Attorney General): universities should not field players who have bet on their own team’s games in college athletics.”
A final outcome is not expected today, but the Big 12 has received letters of support from the attorneys general of Oklahoma, Kansas and Utah.
