Texas Tech Softball Drops Game One.
Texas Tech falls flat in game one of the championship series to the University of Texas. A 7-3 final score
gave Tech fans memories of the final game last year against Texas.
Tech would be the away team in today’s game and would immediately strike in the top of the 1st with a
Mihyia Davis solo shot off Teagan Kavan. It would be Davis’s 10th homerun of the season and Tech
would jump to a 1-0 lead. That would be all as Lauren Allred and Jackie Lis being retired.
The bottom of the 1st would see Texas respond with their own blast. After a Kayden Henry lead off bunt
single it would bring up Katie Stewart. Stewart would greet Kaitlyn Terry with no doubt by hitting the
ball out of the park. This would be Stewart’s 4th straight game with a homerun which marked the 1st time
in WCWS a player would achieve that stat.
After the Stewart homer Texas would hit another single after Vivian Martinez sent one up the middle.
Reese Atwood delivered the 1st out via fielder’s choice. Leighan Goode flied out to center and Terry had
two outs in the inning. This would bring up Hannah Wells and she hit a hard single to the gap in right
field to put runners on the corners. Glasco would deploy the two pitcher rotation by bringing in NiJaree
Canady after KT allowed the single. Canady wouldn’t get help from the defense as Altmeyer would reach
on a single to second and score Atwood. 3-1 Texas leads.
Ashton Maloney would be the 8th batter to appear in the bottom of the 1st. Maloney would slap one into
right field and over the head of Spearman. A 2 RBI triple for the 5th year senior. Just like that it is 5-1
Texas in the bottom of the 1st.
Scoreless frames for the next two innings with Samantha Lincoln coming in for NiJa at the bottom of the
3rd inning.
Fast forward to the bottom half of the 4th as Texas would capitalize on more mental errors from the Tech
defense as with two on and two outs. Martinez would hit a ball up the middle where Toney would glove it
but instead of stepping on second would try to throw over to first. Martinez beat out the throw and another
run scored for Texas.
A 6-1 lead for the Longhorns and it started to feel the Red Raiders were looking towards game 2.
In the top of the 5th would see Tech get two runs back with a Burns leadoff walk. Then two straight outs
to bring up Mia Williams. Williams was already 0-2 with two strikeouts before she hit a laser over the
center field wall. A 2 run blast to cut the Texas lead to 3.
In the bottom of the 6th inning Texas would add another insurance run. A Sneed infield single followed
by a Nichols fielder’s choice. Kayden Henry would single to put two on and one out. Lincoln then would
hit Katie Stewart to load them for Martinez. Martinez would continue her great game one performance
with an RBI sac fly. This would get us to the final score of 7-3 in favor of the longhorns.
Texas would now hold the 1-0 lead in the series but the Red Raiders have yet to lose two straight games
this season. It will be difficult due to a reverse sweep being needed. But as the Alabama games proved, it
is possible for Texas Tech to pull it off.
Tech will have to play with their backs against the wall again tomorrow at 7:08 p.m. CT.
