No. 7 Texas Tech closes season at NCAA Corvallis Regional
No. 7 Texas Tech saw its season come to an end on Wednesday at the NCAA Corvallis Regional at Trysting Tree Golf Club, missing out on a spot in the NCAA Championship Finals by four shots, snapping its five-year streak of advancing to nationals.
The Red Raiders fired a final-round 2-under 282 to finish eighth at 5-under 847, which was not enough to overcome their deficit entering Wednesday and ended shy of the top 5 finish they needed to advance.
Texas Tech’s day still featured late drama as Tim Wiedemeyer continued his standout play and positioned himself in contention for the regional’s individual qualifying spot. Wiedemeyer closed with a 1-under 70 to finish tied for fifth at 6-under 207 across 54 holes.
With Liberty and San Diego tied for the fifth and final advancing spot at 9-under, the two teams entered a playoff to determine the final qualifier. Had Liberty won the playoff, it would have triggered an individual playoff between Wiedemeyer and Charlotte’s Justin Matthews for the final individual advancing berth to nationals.
Instead, San Diego prevailed in the playoff to claim the final qualifying spot, while Liberty’s Michael Lugiano secured the individual advancing position as the top finisher from a non-advancing team after winning the regional medalist honors at 12-under.
Joining San Diego from Corvallis at the NCAA Championship Finals, set for May 29-June 3, were regional champion No. 17 Oklahoma (-34), UCLA (-14), No. 6 Arkansas (-11) and Purdue (-10).
Wiedemeyer’s top-five finish capped one of the strongest performances of the regional, as he carded rounds of 69, 68 and 70.
Adam Bresnu and Ben Gregg each finished tied for 26th at even-par 213. Bresnu closed with a 2-under 69 in the final round, while Gregg shot a final-round 73. Connor Graham tied for 43rd at 2-over 215 after a closing 71.
Brady McHenry competed in the opening two rounds before Simon Hovdal entered the lineup for Wednesday’s final round and shot an even-par 72.
