Texas Tech sweeps Big 12 outdoor titles

For a second-consecutive season, the Texas Tech men’s and women’s track and field teams swept the Big 12 outdoor titles, completing the season sweep of both the indoor and outdoor seasons. Under head coach Wes Kittley, Tech has now secured 20 overall Big 12 team titles.

The Tech men had the meet wrapped up before the final event of the night, the 4×400, as the Red Raiders held a 24-point lead. Meanwhile, it was a different story for the women as they held a 1.5-point lead over BYU going into the 4×400. The team of Collinique Farrington, Mekenze Kelley, Vanessa Balde and Lovina Ewusi lowered their school record with a time of 3:28.05, taking first overall – BYU placed ninth.

Including the women’s 4×400, the Red Raiders topped the podium on five occasions. Malchi Snow kicked it off in the 110m hurdles going 13.08 (3.8) as Tonie-Ann Forbes followed it up in the 100m hurdles going 12.75 (2.6w). Temitope Adeshina won her fifth-straight Big 12 high jump title clearing 1.94m (6-4.25). Lastly, Tamiah Washington scored crucial points as she leaped 13.53m (44-4.75) (1.4w) – took the lead on her fifth attempt.

The field events helped turn the tide for the women late into the meet. McKenzie Davis placed third in the discus (54.17m/177-8) as Olga Szlachta (13.36m/43-10) and Grace Oshiokpu (13.22m/43-4.50) scored fifth and seventh in the triple jump. On the track, Tech got a huge boost in the 400m hurdles thanks to a 2-3 finish from Vanessa Balde (55.39) and Lovia Ewusi (55.75).
