Red Raiders conclude Friday’s competition

The Texas Tech track and field team wrapped up day one of competition around the country this weekend.

Thursday night, Titus Kimaru solidified himself as the new record holder in the 3k steeplechase. The sophomore placed second overall with a time of 8:18.26. Bernard Keter previously held the record at 8:33.75, set at the NCAA Championships in 2016.

Friday evening in Azusa, Stephen Mutai opened his season in the 800m with a time of 1:47.65 as he finished fourth overall.

Tom Jones

Lovina Ewusi highlighted Friday’s night races in the 400m hurdles as she placed 11^th overall with a time of 56.41, lowering her Ghana national record and moving to No. 3 all-time in Tech history.

Olayinka Olajide paced the women’s 200m group as she finished ninth overall with a time of 22.76 (2.9w) – No. 4 all-time in TT history when it comes to wind-aided times.

Mt. SAC

Tamiah Washington placed second in the long jump leaping 6.33m (20-1 ½) as Renata Vodyanszka finished fifth with a mark of 6.08m (19-11 ½), Olga Szlachta was right behind her in sixth leaping 6.04m (19-9 ¾).

Joe Gillespie

Leah Howard and Isaac Woodward won the javelin competition. Howard threw 49.00m (160-9) as Woodward went 66.27m (217-5). For Woodward, it’s a nine-foot PB throw. Mckenzie Davis won the discus competition throwing 53.01m (173-11). Trey Davis placed second with a mark of 54.03m (177-3).

Tech will start the final day of the weekend beginning in Florida at 8:30 am CT in the 100m hurdles Saturday morning.
